Ash Creek Photo
The Oregon Coast, Cascade Mountains, Columbia Gorge, and Canadian Rockies in Pictures
The Columbia River was once the home of huge salmon runs; chinook, sockeye, silver, chum, and steelhead. Now only remnants remain, supported by heroic and expensive efforts. For 10,000 years before Europeans settled the region, this resource supported Native Americans who knew how to harvest the fish without destroying the runs.
A row of boats is anchored just off the mouth of the Little White Salmon River on the Washington side of the Columbia River, fishing for fall chinook salmon.
