Doug Gorsline > Smoke in the air from forest fires hundreds of miles away resulted in some fine sunrise and sunset conditions at Mount Rainier National Park in September 2008. In fact, the 'clouds' in the sky are actually the leading edge of the smoke moving northward. This sunset view is looking to the west down the Nisqually River Valley from the Henry M. Jackson Visitor Center at Paradise.

Doug Gorsline > Smoke in the air from forest fires hundreds of miles away resulted in some fine sunrise and sunset conditions at Mount Rainier National Park in September 2008. This photo was taken at the largest of the Reflection Lakes looking east at sunrise. No filter was used nor was the color enhanced in Photoshop.
Doug Gorsline > This snag was photographed at Inspiration Point on the Stevens Canyon Road in Mount Rainier National Park. The sun was about to set, and there is a certain amount of smoke in the air from large forest fires hundreds of miles away in Oregon. This photo was shot with the excellent Canon 70-200mm f4L IS lens.
Doug Gorsline > This photo was taken on the road to Paradise Inn in Mount Rainier National Park. Mt Rainier is an active volcano, as evidenced by the active steam vent on the left flank of the summit. The massive Nisqually Glacier is visible on the right side, just above the foreground trees. All of Mt. Rainier's glaciers are rapidly receding due to global warming.
Doug Gorsline > This photo of the Paradise River Valley and meadow was taken on a September evening from the Paradise Loop Road below Paradise Inn. This same evening we saw a black bear on the far side of this valley, well out of camera range.
Doug Gorsline > These wildflowers were photographed on the Nisqually Vista Loop trail at Paradise in Mount Rainier. If you are visiting Mt Rainier late in the season like we were, the Nisqually Vista Loop trail is a possible place to see wildflowers in their prime after the peak has passed in other places.
Doug Gorsline > I photographed this fireweed along the Paradise Loop Road in Mount Rainier National Park just below Paradise Inn at the Paradise River. This is about as "clever" and "witty" as I get as a photographer. I loved the way the shapes of the fireweed echoed the shapes of the Englemann Spruce in the background.
Doug Gorsline > This fireweed was photographed in Mount Rainier National Park on the road shoulder at Reflection Lakes. I mention the road shoulder only to make the point that fireweed is common only in disturbed areas, like the site of a recent forest fire, or logging, or roadbuilding. The background of this photo is actually the lake itself. The original blue-gray of the water didn't do much for the photo, so I selected the water with the color tool, and then converted it to a soft mint green with the hue slider.
