The Oregon Coast, Cascade Mountains, Columbia Gorge, and Canadian Rockies in Pictures

Doug Gorsline > At the end of about a quarter mile of 'tunnel', the Cascade Head Trail emerges from the dense coastal shrubbery into a grove of Western red alders. For an excellent guide to the hike, go to: http://www.portlandhikersfieldguide.org/wiki/Cascade_Head_Hike
Doug Gorsline > The next section of trail passes over a series of five or more bridges, depending on how you count. The trail climbs gradually and contours along the side of Cascade Head. Then it goes into a section that I call the 'tunnel', where dense coastal vegetation encloses the trail. Look at the far side of the bridge for an example.
Doug Gorsline > After climbing the steps, the trail levels out for a quarter mile, including this section of boardwalk that passes over a boggy area.
Doug Gorsline > Part of this level section passes through a grove of Sitka spruces that the loggers may have missed. Second growth trees are mixed with a few giants that may qualify as old growth forest.
Doug Gorsline > The trail up Cascade Head offers some of the most spectacular views on the Oregon Coast. The trail from Knight Park on the Salmon River estuary is open year around. The first half mile follows a paved road through Cascade Head Ranch. When you leave the road and enter the woods, the next quarter mile follows a small creek steeply uphill. Be prepared for a bunch of steps.
